Despite a recent late snowfall, Beijing is starting to anticipate warmer weather. With temperatures projected to rise to about 16 degrees Celsius next Saturday, it’s an ideal time to venture outdoors and embrace the new season at one of the city’s most vibrant cultural festivities: Vasant Mela.
Scheduled to return on Saturday, March 14, this annual spring fair organized by the Embassy of India highlights a lively mix of Indian music, dance, food, crafts, and family-friendly activities, turning the venue into a dynamic display of the country's rich cultural heritage.
To understand what participants can look forward to at Vasant Mela 2026, we spoke with Neethu Rajan, the director of the Indian Cultural Centre, about how the festival continues to evolve and the special features planned for this year.
As Vasant Mela celebrates its fourth edition this year, are there any new unique experiences attendees can expect? Vasant Mela, hosted by the Embassy of India in Beijing, is a day dedicated to celebrating Indian culture and welcoming the arrival of spring together. We're aiming to present a "mini India" in all its vibrancy in one venue.
Each year, we strive to make Vasant Mela feel both familiar and novel. This year, we are introducing several performances that have not been seen here previously, including a dance interpretation of the cherished Indian classic, Shakuntalam. We will also showcase folk traditions from across India — spanning Rajasthani dance, Baul music from Bengal, and traditions from Uttarakhand, Manipur, Odisha, and Maharashtra. It's uncommon to witness such a variety on one stage in a single day.
There will be complimentary yoga workshops led by experienced Indian instructors, as well as a free Garba dance workshop where attendees can learn this popular folk tradition from Gujarat.
We’re also featuring a fun interactive quiz with chances to win spot prizes, and we have expanded the Children's Corner to enhance the family-friendly atmosphere of the event.
Many well-loved features from previous years will return, and, of course, the stalls offering Indian food, crafts, textiles, and wellness products will remain a significant part of the experience.
What are some key highlights in this year's cultural lineup? This year’s cultural offerings truly reflect India’s diversity, including classical, folk, and contemporary elements. Expect strong classical presentations with Bharatanatyam, Odissi, Kathak, and Manipuri dance, each showcasing unique techniques and styles. These will be complemented by vibrant regional traditions like Rajasthani Ghoomar, Garhwali and Kumaoni folk dances from Uttarakhand, lively Bhangra from Punjab, Odia folk such as Dalkhai, and the enchanting Baul music of Bengal. Tagore Nritya will also be part of the eastern segment.
Bollywood performances will continue to attract attention, with singing and dancing maintaining the excitement!
Food is always a significant attraction at Vasant Mela. What types of regional Indian cuisines can attendees expect this year? Food is definitely one of the most thrilling aspects of Vasant Mela. It offers Beijing residents an opportunity to savor the diverse flavors of India all in one place.
Attendees can sample a variety of regional cuisines, street food, and festive snacks. There will be pavilions curated by the Embassy Ladies' Club, making it a community-focused event.
In addition to performances and food, the fair will also present traditional handicrafts and cultural experiences. What can guests discover or take home this time? This year, guests can find distinctive items, including products sourced from India, featuring selections endorsed by the Central Silk Board, which promotes India’s rich silk heritage.
Additionally, there will be products presented under the "One District One Product" initiative, highlighting a unique craft or specialty from each district of India to preserve regional traditions and support local artisans.
Visitors can also explore Indian tea, coffee, and spices, as well as Ayurvedic wellness products and information on yoga.
Henna artists will be available to create traditional mehndi designs. This natural plant-based dye is used in India to craft intricate patterns during festivals and celebrations.
There will also be textiles, jewelry, and decorative items from various regions of India for those interested in browsing and purchasing.
Since the event is family-friendly, could you elaborate on the children's activities available? Vasant Mela is designed to provide enjoyment for the entire family. Throughout the day, children can participate in:
- Bollywood dance sessions led by a qualified teacher
- Fun Hindi language classes
- Storytelling sessions
- Yoga sessions specially crafted for young participants
These activities will be offered at various times, allowing families to take part at their convenience throughout the day. The goal is for children to not only observe India's culture but also actively engage with it.
If someone could experience just one or two things at Vasant Mela 2026, what would you recommend they prioritize? This can be a challenging question since Vasant Mela is truly meant to be experienced in
