Experience Indian Flavors in Beijing: Vasant Mela is Back on March 14.

Even though Beijing has recently experienced a late snowfall, the city is already turning its attention to the warmer days ahead. With temperatures predicted to reach about 16 degrees Celsius next Saturday, it's the ideal time to venture outdoors and embrace the arrival of spring at one of the capital's most vibrant cultural festivities: Vasant Mela.

Scheduled to return on Saturday, March 14, this annual spring fair organized by the Embassy of India offers a lively blend of Indian music, dance, food, crafts, and family-friendly activities, transforming the venue into a vibrant display of the country's rich heritage.

To provide insight into what attendees can look forward to at Vasant Mela 2026, we spoke with Neethu Rajan, director of the Indian Cultural Centre, about the festival's growth and the exciting features planned for this year.

This year marks the fourth edition of Vasant Mela. Are there any new experiences for attendees to anticipate? Vasant Mela is the Embassy of India's annual celebration of spring in Beijing—a day dedicated to honoring Indian culture and welcoming the new season together. We aim to create a "mini India" in all its vibrancy within one space.

Each year, we strive to make Vasant Mela feel both familiar and new. This year, we are introducing several performances that have not been showcased here before, such as a dance adaptation of the beloved Indian classic, Shakuntalam. Additionally, we are presenting a variety of folk traditions from across India—ranging from Rajasthani dance and Bengali Baul music to cultural expressions from Uttarakhand, Manipur, Odisha, and Maharashtra. It’s quite rare to witness such diversity on a single stage in one day.

Free yoga workshops led by experienced Indian instructors will also be available, along with a Garba dance workshop where visitors can learn this popular folk tradition from Gujarat. Furthermore, we're organizing an interactive quiz with spot prizes, and the Children's Corner has been expanded for an enjoyable family outing.

Many beloved elements from past years will return as well, and, of course, the stalls featuring Indian food, crafts, textiles, and wellness products will remain a significant part of the experience.

What are some key highlights of this year's cultural lineup? The cultural lineup this year truly reflects India's diversity—showcasing classical, folk, and contemporary elements. Among the strong classical presentations will be Bharatanatyam, Odissi, Kathak, and Manipuri dance, each with their unique techniques and aesthetics. These will be accompanied by vibrant regional traditions, including Rajasthani Ghoomar, Garhwali and Kumaoni folk dances from Uttarakhand, energetic Bhangra from Punjab, Odia folk such as Dalkhai, and the mystical Baul music of Bengal. Tagore Nritya will also be featured as part of the eastern segment.

Bollywood performances are always a crowd favorite, ensuring an energetic atmosphere with singing and dancing.

Food is an essential aspect of Vasant Mela. What regional Indian cuisines and specialties can visitors expect to sample this year? Food is undoubtedly one of the most thrilling aspects of Vasant Mela. It provides an excellent opportunity for Beijing residents to experience the diversity of Indian cuisine all in one location.

Guests can savor various regional cuisines, street food, and festive snacks. There will also be pavilions operated by the Embassy Ladies' Club, ensuring a community-driven event.

In addition to performances and food, the fair will feature traditional handicrafts and cultural experiences. What elements can guests discover or take home this time? Attendees will find several distinctive offerings this year. Products will be available from India, specifically selected with support from the Central Silk Board to promote India’s rich silk heritage.

Items will also be highlighted under the "One District One Product" initiative, which showcases unique crafts or specialties from each region of India, supporting local artisans and preserving regional traditions.

Moreover, visitors can explore Indian tea, coffee, and spices, along with Ayurvedic wellness products and information about yoga. Henna artists will be available to provide traditional mehndi designs, a natural plant-based dye used in India for intricate patterns during festivals and celebrations.

There will also be textiles, jewelry, and decorative items from various parts of India for those interested in browsing and shopping.

The event is family-friendly. Can you share more about the activities for children? Yes, Vasant Mela is designed for the entire family to enjoy. Throughout the day, children can participate in:

      - Bollywood dance sessions led by a reputable instructor

      - Fun Hindi classes

      - Storytelling sessions

      - Yoga classes tailored for younger attendees

These activities will be available at multiple time slots, allowing families to participate comfortably throughout the day. Our goal is for children not only to observe Indian culture but to experience it actively.

If someone could only experience one or two things at Vasant Mela 2026, what would you recommend they not miss? That’s always a tough question because Vasant Mela is meant
