**Beijing to Use Pollen Fixative to Combat Pollen This Spring**
In a change to its strategy for tackling pollen, Beijing will implement a new “pollen fixative” this spring as part of its annual pollen spraying campaign.
This fixative, which is a polymer organic compound, was created by researchers from the School of Plant Sciences and Technology at Beijing University of Agriculture. When mixed with water trucks, the fixative can be sprayed onto trees, forming a transparent coating that prevents pollen from being released into the air. This method only requires spraying once a day, in contrast to the traditional water-only approach which necessitates three to five sprays daily. It is reported that using the pollen fixative is up to 20 times more effective at controlling pollen spread than the conventional method.
The new compound will be applied to male juniper trees in the main six districts of the city, which includes approximately 168,000 male juniper trees and a total of 337,000 juniper trees within the Fifth Ring Road.
Another pollen fixative targeted at cypress trees has completed trials and is set to be implemented next year.
