During the May Day holiday, Beijing SKP, one of the city’s top luxury shopping venues, marked the occasion with a remarkable event. On May 1 and 2, Hangzhou Suntiandy Culture and Performing Arts Co., Ltd showcased an extraordinary circus performance that turned the mall into a theatrical extravaganza.
I was fortunate to attend on May 1 and witnessed all three segments of this spectacular show, which had many memorable elements.
Perfect for enthusiasts of physical comedy, the show provided an exhilarating blend of grace and amusement, featuring mime acts, contortionists, shoulder ballet, diabolo performances, and magic tricks. The show's elaborate and opulent stage designs were specifically crafted for audience interaction. Each segment attracted a large and varied crowd of children and adults, both locals and expatriates, all eager to engage with the performances and be part of the thrill.
The costumes and makeup were among the most intricate I have ever encountered; each character created an entire universe through their attire. Complemented by the floral-themed fixed main stage, multi-level performances scattered throughout the venue, and immersive parades, the production offered constantly shifting backdrops and a deep sense of spatial involvement. Additionally, this performance differed from previous ones in Wuhan and Chengdu, featuring an eight-member cast from various backgrounds, including two characters: a suited gentleman and a magician.
The lively and engaging music made it easy to find the performance by simply following the rhythmic bass. The show was divided into three parts:
Part 1: The Fantasy Parade
The cast enchanted the crowd as they roamed the first floor of the mall, entertaining visitors with balloons, magic tricks, acrobatics, and more. Many tricks involved participation from young children in the audience! It was the ideal daytime activity for the May holiday: enjoy lunch, browse, and meander through the mall alongside this amazing cast!
Part 2: The Fixed-Location Circus
The cast delivered two short, yet enchanting experiences that showcased individual performances by each member.
Part 3: The Magical Garden Circus Wonderland Show
The grand finale was truly unforgettable. Set on the fourth floor in a specially designed open area (complete with real flowers!), every performer was mesmerizing. The stage they created was stunning, with spectators gathering to observe performers executing incredible stunts while weaving an enchanting narrative.
While this wonderful May Day Special performance may have concluded, it is certainly not the only reason to visit SKP Beijing. The gaps between acts gave me the perfect chance to explore each level of the luxurious mall. Dining options were plentiful, ranging from quick, food court-style meals on the basement level to family-friendly restaurants on the fifth and sixth floors. Cuisines varied from Japanese to Singaporean, and I would have been happy to dine at any of these establishments.
The breaks between performances were also ideal for browsing the mall’s numerous shops, from high-end international clothing and shoe brands to fun home appliances showcased for testing. Enhancing the sensory experience, each floor even had a unique scent.
From my wanderings, it was evident that SKP is genuinely welcoming to both expatriates and tourists. Notable features include "instant tax refund" services and bilingual assistance at the information desk, along with bilingual signage throughout the mall.
Beijing SKP undoubtedly stands out as the ultimate shopping destination for expats in Beijing, and the May Day holiday is certainly an excellent time to visit!
