Day and Night in Sanlitun Courtyard No. 4

Situated behind a cluster of offices and businesses just southeast of Sanlitun Taikooli, Sanlitun Courtyard No. 4 – 三里屯机电院 Sānlǐtún Jīdiànyuàn in Chinese – has experienced a resurgence over the past year. The influx of new, mostly food and beverage venues has made this area an ideal spot to kick off your day in Sanlitun or, even better, to ease into the start, middle, or end of your night.

Here are some of our top picks for the occasion, along with some recommendations for food and drinks.

      DAO Coffee

The Courtyard No. 4 branch of this Beijing coffee chain integrates seamlessly with the area's industrial vibe. The concrete exterior flows into the interior, which features simple wooden seating and tables perfect for chatting, reading, or working while enjoying a drink from DAO's menu. They serve classic coffees like Americano (RMB 28) and Latte (RMB 35), as well as various pour-over selections (starting at RMB 48). For something different, they have a rotating list of specialty coffee drinks and flavored sodas for those who prefer non-coffee options.

      Panorama

For coffee accompanied by something more substantial, Panorama is a great choice within Courtyard No. 4. Here, you can enjoy Americanos, cappuccinos, and lattes alongside the eatery's specialty: crepes. They offer traditional options like the sweet Tatin (RMB 65), with flambéed apples in rum, caramel, vanilla ice cream, and whipped cream, as well as the savory Old Classic (RMB 72), which features a folded crepe filled with ham, Emmental cheese, and an egg. There are also adventurous selections like the Padrino (RMB 80), inspired by Italy and loaded with Serrano ham, bell peppers, feta, and sun-dried tomatoes.

      Berlin Bites Döner

If you're in the mood for savory food alongside coffee, head to Berlin Bites, which moved from its original site near Liangmaqiao to Courtyard No. 4 last year. This small restaurant specializes in German street food, particularly Berlin-style döner kebabs with chicken, beef (sliced from a vertical spit), or veggie fillings, as well as currywurst. Since relocating, they've expanded their menu to include Dürüm Wraps (RMB 35-45), made with thinner Lavash-style flatbread and available with the same fillings plus a falafel choice. Patrons can enjoy the dürüm or döner as part of a lunchtime combo with selections starting at RMB 49/set for dürüm or RMB 65/set for döner.

      Home Plate BBQ

As a longstanding favorite in Courtyard No. 4 and Beijing's dining scene, Home Plate is well-known for its Texas barbecue. Though it opens around lunchtime, it becomes a significant part of your evening plans. Start your night with a beer or margarita alongside one of Home Plate’s meat platters with diverse sides. Recently, they revamped their menu, adding items like Char Siu Hong Kong Style Pork Ribs (RMB 198/400g + two sides) and various wing flavors such as Buffalo, Char Siu, Hot in Memphis, Hot Honey, and Tangy Barbecue (RMB 78 for six, RMB 128 for 12, RMB 188 for 18, RMB 258 for 24).
