Pinggu District Great Wall Set to Open Next Year
Restoration work is currently being conducted on a segment of the Great Wall in Pinggu District. The yet-to-be-opened Jiangjunguan section of the Ming dynasty Great Wall spans 53.67 km and features over 270 historical sites along its route. It is regarded as the most authentic and preserved section of the wild Great Wall within the Beijing-Tianjin-Hebei area.
In recent years, Pinggu District has initiated several activities, including archaeological digs and efforts to reinforce sections of the wall. As preparations are made for the public opening of the Jiangjunguan section, authorities and experts are also working on installing reversible infrastructure and environmental restoration. A key focus for those involved in the project is determining how to transform the cultural heritage of the Great Wall into a catalyst for rural development.
The opening of the Jiangjunguan Great Wall section to the public is anticipated by the end of 2026.
JD.com Launches First Store in Beijing
On December 17, JD.com debuted its initial physical supermarket in Beijing. Named Jingdong Discount Supermarket, it is situated in Xishanhui, Mentougou, and provides a variety of typical products commonly found in Chinese supermarkets, as well as some Western and Western-inspired products, all at very low prices.
Shoppers noted some humorous pricing tactics, such as socks being sold by weight instead of by pairs or packs, with a specific selection priced at RMB 26.7 per kilogram. The store helpfully informs customers that 1 jin of mid-calf socks is roughly 17 pairs, while 1 jin of high-calf socks equals about 15 pairs. One budget-conscious shopper was pleased to discover that the average price for a single pair of socks is around RMB 1.
Beyond the cheap socks, the store enjoyed a successful opening, drawing long lines and large crowds eager to explore the wide range of offerings and score some great deals before the new year.
