While we enjoy exploring the ancient stone houses and remnants of old China, the modern world is rapidly overtaking this land like a tidal wave. Peering through the entrance of a villager’s home revealed that although Chairman Mao’s ‘old’ China remains cherished, there's ample space for contemporary appliances like a television and a fan... Our friends are adapting well to this transformation, and observing them offers us glimpses of what future life in Canada or England could potentially resemble. Nowhere is the fusion of the old and the new more pronounced than at Ruyi Mountain, where cable cars and glass bridges challenge both gravity and imagination, transporting us to a realm where the earth seems to meet the sky... A ropeway lifted us 700 feet above the valley floor, making the world shrink beneath us... Then, as if the mountain itself were toying with our sense of scale, we glided two kilometers from one peak to another, suspended between summits in a surreal journey... Stepping from the cable car onto a suspension bridge that resembled a woven spider's web… each step was just a heartbeat above the canyon below. Hundreds of stone steps guided us toward the very summit of Ruyi Mountain, where the horizon unfolded like a painting. Mountains stretched endlessly in every direction, and for a moment, it felt as if the world was entirely ours... But the adventure was just beginning. We continued up hundreds of stone steps on a path that curled around the mountains and crossed bridges high above the treetops… until we came to a lengthy glass balcony seemingly hanging in mid-air… Hundreds of feet above the jungle canopy, it looked impossibly fragile, and although some felt fear, we were all filled with awe. By the time we descended via cable car, we had walked ten thousand steps. The ingenuity involved in constructing in such a location is remarkable. The mountains’ sheer cliffs, the soaring bridges, the fragile glass floors all showcase a level of skill and vision that is nearly beyond comprehension… China’s modern wonders extend well beyond the mountains. New highways stretch like wide ribbons across the landscape, more than half the vehicles are electric, and even the most basic models come equipped for autonomous driving. Riding in these cars feels akin to stepping into a science fiction film as onboard cameras detect road signs and traffic signals; monitor for pedestrians, animals, and even lone traffic cones; and continuously adjust our position relative to other vehicles… The railways are equally awe-inspiring. Nearly fifty thousand kilometers of high-speed track crisscross the nation, with luxurious trains traveling at speeds over 400 kilometers per hour. China embodies contrasts, where ancient traditions converge with the future, and each step upward serves as a reminder that the sky is not the limit, but merely the beginning. Thanks to our friends Curry and Rose, our visit to the peak of Mt. Ruyi concluded with a feast. As we enjoyed a delightful lunch with our hosts and some newly made friends at a teahouse located atop the Giggling Tree Hotel, we gazed out at the breathtaking view of karst mountains stretching endlessly into the distance and reminisced about our enchanting morning of scaling their heights...
