It has been nearly three months since Dada shut its doors in Beijing, and numerous music enthusiasts throughout the capital are still grieving its absence. However, there's exciting news! This Saturday (Sep 20), a special Dada pop-up event will take place at The Factory in Gulou, celebrating one of Beijing's most memorable music venues through a blend of art, music, and nostalgia.
Originally launched in Shanghai in 2009 before opening its Beijing branch in 2012, initially in Gulou and later relocating near Ritan Park in 2021, Dada quickly established itself as one of the city's most iconic clubs. Although the brand continues in Kunming, its closure in the capital has left a significant void in Beijing's nightlife. This pop-up intends to temporarily bridge that gap.
The event will feature a special exhibition displaying numerous legendary Dada posters from the past. Longtime patrons will enjoy a nostalgic experience as they revisit the artwork that played a crucial role in shaping Beijing's underground music scene for over a decade.
In addition to the exhibition, exclusive Dada merchandise such as hats, t-shirts, and posters will be available, along with a few original canvas posters for sale, offering fans a chance to own a piece of Dada's history. True Dada enthusiasts should arrive early to secure their items, and lucky purchasers will also receive complimentary Dada merchandise.
The Factory will not only showcase artwork but will also host a robust DJ lineup in true Dada style, including Dada regulars Leo Furioso, Yesen, Oshi, and Yujie – the talent that helped create the club's distinctive sound.
Regarding this collaboration, The Factory owner Zak Elmasri mentioned to the Beijinger:
“I’m thrilled to bring Dada back to our venue on Gulou Dong Dajie, the very street where it began. I was there from start to finish, and I vividly remember Dada Shanghai’s grand opening. I've visited both of its Shanghai locations and the one in Kunming.
This event feels like a full circle moment, returning to Gulou Dongdajie, which might be the most fondly remembered location in Beijing compared to the later one near Ritan. Dada was a hallmark of Gulou and its establishments, making it special to have such a significant venue back in the hutongs.”
So, whether you’re seeking a nostalgic experience, searching for unique poster art, or simply looking for an enjoyable night out in Gulou, make your way to The Factory this Saturday and raise a glass to Dada as its legacy continues.
The Dada Pop-Up and Exhibition will take place at The Factory from 4 PM, and entry is free. Those interested in purchasing original posters can consult a staff member.
