Nightclub Dada is bidding farewell to Beijing this weekend, closing its doors after 13 years in the city. This marks another setback for Beijing's nightlife, following the recent announcement of ByeByeDisco's closure, which is also happening this weekend after a brief return. Although the Dada brand will continue with pop-up events across China and in its permanent location in Kunming, the club will be greatly missed in the northern city.
In its final week, Dada Beijing is hosting a flurry of shows, offering loyal patrons and newcomers a chance to enjoy a last night or two before it permanently closes.
We spoke with club owner Michael O., known as DJ Ozone, about his feelings regarding Dada's last hurrah in Beijing, the surprises planned for the final two nights, and what lies ahead.
What are you feeling now that the final nights of Dada Beijing are here? It’s a whirlwind of emotions. I've experienced this before with other locations and cities, but this feels like a more significant closing chapter. Globally, clubs are shutting down right now; the industry is evolving. It seems to mark the end of an era.
Since we announced the closure a month ago, there has been an outpouring of love, memories, and fans traveling from across the country to celebrate here. It’s a lot to take in.
This isn’t the first time Dada Beijing has closed; it previously relocated from Gulou to Ritan a few years ago. Would you consider reopening in Beijing if the opportunity arises, or is it time to move on? We are still discussing what will happen with the venue and the Dada brand. We will at least continue with pop-up events, as we've done in other cities.
And what’s happening at Dada Kunming for those interested in heading south? Dada Kunming is thriving. It’s a great venue, actually. We have the club area along with a craft beer taproom next door called The Dude. Summers in Kunming are lovely, and we have our anniversary party on the weekend of July 18-19, so it’s a perfect time to escape the heat of Beijing.
Are there any surprises planned for Friday and Saturday? I’ll be performing all night on Friday, and I’m bringing my favorite singer, S.O.S (Sandra), to join me. She’ll be doing a few sets with me, featuring some disco and funk classics, along with a few surprises.
Saturday will feature six DJs who have played an important role in Dada's history, from both Shanghai and Beijing, with the event coinciding with the 15th anniversary party of the music collective Lovebang. Attendees can expect a diverse range of music.
We’ll also be giving away some free merchandise to the best dancers, so bring positive energy! Please arrive early; doors open at 8 PM. The last time we held a closing night, we reached full capacity before 11 PM.
Additionally, we’ll reward the best photos and videos shared on Redbook or Instagram. Just tag us.
Thank you, Beijing. It’s been an incredible experience!
Ozone's '80s Disco Nonsense with S.O.S is taking place on Friday, May 30, starting at 8 PM. Tickets are RMB 88 at the door. Click here for more details.
