5G-A Test Networks Launched
Chinese mobile network providers have reported the launch of 5G-A test networks across 31 provinces and provincial-level administrative divisions in China. Also referred to as 5G-Advanced, this enhanced technology is expected to deliver faster speeds, greater network capacity, expanded functionalities, and improved support for AI integration, among other enhancements.
For instance, while 5G theoretical maximum download speeds are claimed to reach 10Gbps or higher, 5G-A theoretical maximum download speeds are estimated to be between 20Gbps to over 1Tbps. However, actual average download speeds in real-world situations will likely be considerably lower. Nonetheless, 5G-A is anticipated to be superior to 5G. The upload speeds with 5G-A are also expected to be remarkably fast, potentially being ten times quicker than those with 5G.
Major networks such as China Mobile, China Telecom, and China Unicom are working on enhancing their network infrastructure and assure improved coverage as the year progresses. In Beijing, several locations, including the China International Exhibition Center (Shunyi), Beijing Capital Airport, China World Mall, Peking Union Medical College, Universal Studios Beijing, Fuchengmen Avenue, Shougang Park, Yuyuantan Park, the Beijing Municipal Administrative Center Government Services Center in Tongzhou, several universities, and select areas between the second and fourth ring roads, currently have 5G-A coverage. Users entering these zones may automatically connect to 5G-A on their devices, provided there is sufficient mobile support, without any additional charges.
Tencent Unveils Enhanced Earthquake Warning Features
On May 12, Tencent revealed updates to its earthquake early warning features on WeChat and QQ, now offering nationwide notifications. The enhancement includes improved alert notifications and warnings for major earthquakes in a user’s vicinity, featuring a full-screen pop-up and sound countdown.
Users can set up the earthquake alert system via the 中国地震台网 mini program on WeChat or through the QQ全城助力 official account on QQ. This function also provides helpful advice on actions to take in different earthquake scenarios, depending on the predicted time frame before the earthquake occurs.
Bird’s Nest Introduces New Color-Coded Entrance System
On May 11, Beijing police announced that the National Stadium, commonly known as the Bird’s Nest, has implemented "color-based entrance guidelines" to streamline the entry process. The stadium is now divided into four color zones—red, blue, yellow, and green—allowing ticket holders to enter more swiftly by aligning their ticket color with the corresponding designated area and check-in gate.
The upgraded ticketing app also features post-purchase zone color information for seating, check-in gate locations, subway and ride-hailing route guidance, and integrated navigation maps.
Outside the venue, there are large, color-coded signs for each section, along with staff available to assist with navigation.
These new entrance procedures have already resulted in reduced line lengths and wait times, minimizing confusion. Additionally, new exit protocols have been introduced, featuring areas for various transportation methods, including 20 stations for online ride-hailing, to facilitate a smooth outflow of attendees and enhance security.
