My name is Hannah Tang, and I am currently a Grade 11 student at the Western Academy of Beijing (WAB). I am a dancer as well as someone with a strong passion for astrophysics and science overall. Since last year, I have been leading the STEMx Club (Science Club) at WAB, and we are thrilled to invite you to our Science Day on April 19!
Since I began the IB DP program, I’ve observed a change in students' attitudes towards learning. For many, achieving a score of 7 (the highest mark) has become the main measure of success. This is particularly evident in STEM subjects, where the learning process often follows a rigid pattern: listen to the teacher, complete numerous problem sets at home, and repeat—all in preparation for the next exam. In such an environment, it’s easy to lose sight of what makes these subjects thrilling: curiosity, creativity, and the ability to use them to tackle real-world issues.
That’s why, since last year, I have taken on a leadership role in WAB’s STEMx Club alongside my co-leaders. Although the club has historically engaged Grade 4 students with entertaining experiments, this year we have adopted a more ambitious goal: to motivate high school students across Beijing to view STEM not simply as a subject to memorize, but as a means of exploration and innovation.
