The lively Spring Fair Vasant Mela is set to return to Beijing on March 22.

As spring approaches, one of the most lively cultural events in Beijing is set to make its return – Vasant Mela. Scheduled for Saturday, March 22, starting at 11:15 am, this annual spring fair, organized by the Embassy of India, has become a festive celebration of Indian culture, featuring an energetic mix of music, dance, food, and handmade crafts. Now in its third year, the event has expanded in size and excitement, offering fresh experiences for both long-time fans of Indian culture and those encountering it for the first time.

To delve deeper into what Vasant Mela 2025 has to offer, we spoke with Neethu Rajan, director of the Indian Cultural Centre, about the festival's growth, new highlights, and why this year's event is poised to be the most memorable yet.

First, for those who might not know, can you provide a brief overview of Vasant Mela? Vasant Mela is a delightful spring fair celebrating Indian culture and welcoming the new season with joy. It’s essentially a vibrant party organized by the Embassy of India here in Beijing—a day filled with music, dance, food, art, and happiness, open to anyone who wishes to participate in the festivities.

How has the event changed since its inception in 2023, and what new experiences should attendees anticipate this year? Since our inaugural event in 2023, Vasant Mela has truly flourished. Last year alone, we saw over 4,000 visitors in person, alongside many more online participants. This year, we’re aiming even higher! We’ve expanded the venue, increased the number of stalls, and diversified our food options. Additionally, we have an exciting array of new cultural performances and interactive activities for everyone to enjoy.

Food is always a centerpiece at Vasant Mela. Could you share some standout dishes or regional specialties that will be available at the food stalls? Food is certainly a major highlight! This year, we promise an enticing culinary journey across India, featuring everything from spicy street snacks to comforting home-cooked meals. There will surely be something new and delicious for everyone to enjoy.

There is also a significant emphasis on Indian handicrafts and art at this year's festival. Can you showcase some unique items and artists that will be present? Absolutely! Our handicraft stalls resemble treasure troves, where you can find a range of colorful textiles, intricate jewelry, and vibrant artwork, all representing different regions of India. It’s a wonderful way to take a piece of India home with you.

Cultural performances play a vital role in the festival. What types of performances can attendees expect this year? We have organized a dynamic schedule of performances that will keep you entertained throughout the day. Expect a variety of classical dances such as Bharatanatyam, Odissi, Manipuri, and Kathak, along with lively Bollywood songs and folk dances. A highlight this year will be our interactive Bhangra and Garba sessions—folk dances from Punjab and Gujarat—where attendees can join in and learn a few steps. I’m confident each performance will create wonderful memories for all.

What place do yoga and Ayurveda hold in the festival? How can attendees participate in these wellness practices during the event? Wellness has always been an integral part of Vasant Mela. We will host dedicated yoga sessions for both novices and experienced practitioners to learn and practice together under the guidance of skilled yoga gurus. We’ll also have Ayurveda stalls that provide insights into India’s holistic approach to health through natural remedies and ancient knowledge. If you’re already familiar with yoga, don’t miss our friendly yoga contest, judged by a panel of experts.

For those new to Indian culture, what would you recommend as a must-see at Vasant Mela? If you’re unfamiliar with Indian culture, I suggest you make sure to visit the cultural stage. It’s a central spot where you can experience everything from heartfelt classical performances to lively dance numbers and even a yoga challenge! It’s a fantastic way to immerse yourself in India’s rich traditions all in one place.

The festival encourages attendees to wear Indian attire. Do you have any tips for dressing up and are there any prizes for participants? Wearing Indian attire enhances the fun and festive atmosphere. Feel free to opt for bright and bold colors, mixing traditional pieces with your personal style. We even have a "best dressed" award along with some exciting prizes for those who really embrace the look. So, pull out your favorite saree, kurta, or any fun Indian accessory, and join the celebration in style.

On a personal note, what are you most looking forward to at Vasant Mela 2025? For me, it’s the people. I’m excited to see our communities come together. I’m particularly looking forward to the live performances and the opportunity to see new faces enjoying the fair.

Lastly, do you have any other cultural events lined up at the embassy, and how can people stay informed about future events?
