As expats, we understand that imported products come at a higher price, and often, we simply do without our beloved soap, snack, or beverage from home. However, occasionally we relent and spend more for that nonessential yet comforting item. That is, until we discover Hot Maxx, a chain of discount stores that offers a vast array of products from Europe, the Americas, and various parts of Asia at significant discounts!
The inventory constantly changes, and it's important to pay attention as some items may be nearing their expiration dates. Yet, on any given visit, you might come across your favorite K-beauty moisturizer, a fantastic bottle of Spanish wine, and Belgian chocolate, all for under RMB 100.
During my last trip to the Sanlitun SOHO location, I found a Korean hair serum that I usually buy for RMB 55 on sale for RMB 29, and a box of mixed nuts that I would have paid RMB 106 for at Sam's Club was just RMB 26. Additionally, brand-name feminine products were available for less than half the price on Taobao. There were also numerous international snacks, OTC medicines, and pet supplies, but the best bargain is located to the left of the checkout counter—a small selection of imported wines and spirits, many priced over RMB 200, starting at just RMB 39.
That said, be cautious: not everything is a fantastic deal. For instance, I encountered an Innisfree face wash gift set that was actually about RMB 20 cheaper on Taobao, and it's wise to verify expiration dates on items like vitamins. Overall, though, it offers a taste of home at a more affordable price.
To find the Sanlitun SOHO location, take the escalators down on the north side, and look on the left approximately 100 meters after you exit the stairs. For other locations, simply search for Hot Maxx on Dianping or your preferred map application to locate the nearest one. Happy shopping!
