Donating blood is often perceived as a daunting or frightening experience, but Rumble in the Jumble and Beijing United Family Hospital aim to change this perspective with their event called "Heartbeat." This community-focused blood donation initiative is set for Saturday, May 23, transforming Rumble's cherished Bazzarday into a day filled with wellness, entertainment, and community bonding, all revolving around a vital cause.
While donations will occur in a tranquil, designated area, the rest of the venue will be active with various activities. Rumble and Beijing United have teamed up with three improv groups: Beijing Improv, Beijing Broads, and Comedy Citadel, to help promote the event and ensure there are plenty of laughs throughout the day.
Families can engage in games and activities suitable for both kids and adults, or they can unwind with meditation and mindfulness sessions. In true Rumble Bazzarday style, there will also be a market featuring nearly 30 vendors selling crafts, food, beverages, and wellness products.
At the core of the event is a simple yet pressing reality: blood shortages are a persistent global concern. The need for donors can arise suddenly due to surgeries, accidents, cancer treatments, or childbirth complications, impacting anyone. Through "Heartbeat," Rumble and Beijing United aspire to not only encourage on-the-day donations but also to create a long-term community donor network that individuals can turn to in emergencies.
Before the event, we interviewed Rumble organizer Fran Hanshing to discuss the inspiration behind "Heartbeat," the significance of entertainment in the event, and their aim to make blood donation more approachable.
What motivated Rumble to collaborate with Beijing United Family Hospital for this blood drive? Beijing United Family Hospital has been a supporter of Rumble's events for a considerable time. They embody security in health services for both local and international communities, making them a fantastic partner we are proud to collaborate with. We had been discussing a joint initiative for some time, and at the end of January this year, we finally met to brainstorm themes, including the organization of a blood drive.
The idea was certainly challenging, but Team Rumble thrives on challenges. We named it "Heartbeat"—a community-driven event aimed at addressing a crucial public need through creativity, education, and engagement regarding blood donation awareness and donor recruitment. We are not "inventing" blood drives—Beijing United Family Hospital has been conducting them for over 20 years—but raising awareness about this essential public responsibility required something different. Enter Rumble's epic Bazzarday!
Why did you choose to partner with improv groups for the event, and can you elaborate on their involvement? We've worked with improv teams previously, and we knew we had to present this as a community-for-the-community initiative. Laughter is beneficial for your heart, and a healthy heart pumps more blood—making them ideal partners. Their creativity is vital. To produce content that is educational, practical, and humorous simultaneously required a larger team. "It takes an entire village to raise a child"—the awareness around blood donation needed the concerted effort of the entire international community.
This event is more than just a blood drive; why was it crucial to integrate wellness, entertainment, and community activities into the day? Let's face it: you typically don't wake up saying, "I'm going to donate blood today." We've received feedback that blood donation is perceived as time-consuming, potentially painful, or that too much blood is taken. There are too many objections. The truth is, people often only realize the importance of it when they find themselves in an emergency needing donors.
We thought that incorporating wellness into the day would attract a broader audience. There are activities for everyone: conscious consumption, improv workshops on stage, dance sessions, mindful sharing, children's activities—and donors will receive a goodie bag and a donor's certificate. Pretty exciting, right?
Lastly, do you envision this collaboration developing into a recurring community initiative? We’ve been organizing this event for over four months, and we’re incredibly thankful for our partners' enthusiasm to be involved. We hope the message resonates, and by the end of the day, we want to leave with the feeling that this not only filled our hearts with pride but also became part of the audience's mindset. That way, when we host this again, the community will know it will be enjoyable—not painful or dull.
We are still encouraging people to donate blood on-site during the event, but if someone can't donate that day, they can join our donor list for future calls.
