**Washington Cucurto**
Known as Cucu, Cucurto did not complete high school and is a self-taught writer who frequented libraries and bought books. His interest in literature was ignited by a coworker during his time at a supermarket. His debut work, a poetry collection titled *Zelarayán*, was published in 1997 and contributed to the reckless realism movement he developed with other writers. *Zelarayán* gained notoriety after the government of Fernando de la Rúa attempted to ban it from public libraries in 2001 due to its content.
Cucurto continued his literary journey with novels and poetry that have been translated into various languages, appearing in anthologies across Latin America and Europe. In 2002, amidst the Argentine crisis, he established the publishing house Eloísa Cartonera, which he still leads. This cooperative aims to publish books with cardboard covers sourced from marginalized individuals collecting cardboard. These covers are hand-colored by the same community members.
Following a scholarship in Stuttgart, Germany, Cucurto is currently a sports columnist for ESPN and remains dedicated to creating new works. He was awarded the Félix Elmuza distinction by the Union of Cuban Journalists (UPeC).
