Valentine’s Day is typically a celebration for couples, but for Rumble in the Jumble, it’s also a wonderful opportunity to show appreciation for our furry friends with the upcoming Ruff and Rumble charity event.

Taking place at Modernista this Saturday, Ruff and Rumble aims to raise awareness about pet adoption and responsible pet ownership, featuring activities like a runway fashion show where pets and their owners can showcase their style to win the audience's cheers and possibly some prizes!

We spoke with Fran Hanshing from Rumble in the Jumble prior to the event to learn more about the runway show and additional details.

Hi Fran, it's great to catch up! Do you have any pets? Yes, I have six aquatic turtles (five of which are adopted) and over 30 freshwater fish spread across two tanks.

How did this idea originate and who have you collaborated with to bring it to life? The inaugural partnership between Rumble in the Jumble and pet rescuers began in 2021 at Tongli Market (Shunyi). These passionate rescuers, active in our Beijing community, dedicate their time and resources to help abandoned pets find loving homes. Since they frequently take part in our events, we decided to create a special day focused on promoting pet welfare and responsible ownership.

In 2022, we went back to Tongli Market (Shunyi) and teamed up with three animal rescue organizations for "Ruff & Rumble," an event tailored to raise funds for these groups. Thanks to the support from the Beijing community, we successfully collected over RMB 15,000. Inspired by this achievement, we hosted the event again in 2023 with four organizations, co-hosted with Plan B (Pinguo Yuan), and raised nearly RMB 10,000 with the help of various supporters and sponsors. Each event has been incredibly meaningful and filled with wonderful experiences, demonstrating that puppy love is truly irresistible.

This year, liberated from Covid restrictions and in the beautiful setting of Modernista, we are hopeful for even greater success than previous years. We are once again thankful for our amazing sponsors and supporters.

Since Rumble often incorporates a market aspect, will there be one this time? Yes, we’ve introduced an exciting concept called “Bazzarday” (with two z’s) that emphasizes conscious consumption. Some adventurous crafters and emerging brands, even those with minimal marketing skills, have achieved success in a market where many shoppers typically favor mainstream brands. However, there is an increasing movement among Chinese consumers seeking niche brands that prioritize their well-being.

People are becoming more cognizant of their environmental footprint, and these new brands can enhance their well-being. But are these emerging brands ready for the Chinese market? Likely not yet. Building a brand takes time and resources, and many small producers find that challenging. So, what’s the ideal platform for new entrepreneurs to test their creations? Pop-up markets and bazaars! That’s the essence of #bazzardays. When we organize our boutique events, we carefully select vendors based on a theme, showcasing the best of Beijing! This way we foster an environment where everyone can flourish together.

How will the runway show function? Will there be judging or awards? This is our first time hosting a runway show, and we’re very enthusiastic! We have several pet owners signed up with their pets.

Starting at 3 PM, Dorrit (from Divine Daughters) and Paul (from Art Talks Beijing PR) will take the stage as hosts. They will share stories from participants about their unique relationships with their pets while they walk the runway. It won't be a competition, but all participants will receive an appreciation award for their involvement. We eagerly anticipate the outfits they’ll present!

What else will the event offer, and what should attendees bring or prepare (aside from their pets, of course)? We will have a kissing booth, raffle, photo booth, workshops, good music, and a variety of vendors showcasing pet products and services. Among these will be astral readings, veterinary services, and pet relocation services.

Modernista will offer happy hour specials during the event, with Aperol spritz, mojitos, and red sangria available for only RMB 50!

So, bring some cash to help support the cause—it's #forthepups.

Additionally, if you can't attend but would still like to contribute, you can add Rumble’s WeChat service account: BAZZARDAY, and we’d gladly accept donations!

Rumble in the Jumble's Ruff and Rumble event is happening on Saturday, February 15, from 1 PM to 6:30 PM. Entry is free, and you can find out more about the event through this post.

Location: Modernista, 44 Baochao Hutong, Gulou Dongdajie, Dongcheng District, 北京市东城区鼓楼东大街宝钞

The remainder of Chongqing - Without a Permanent Residence

The following day (January 30), I attempted to locate an earlier bus returning to Nanjing, as all the trains were fully booked. I visited two bus stations before deciding to give up. The journey back to my hostel from the last bus station was enjoyable because I rode a massive escalator up the mountain.
